Q. How can I check on the credibility of the contractors?

A. This question is very important. At Enclosure Guide, we pre-screen the contractors being referred to you. However, it is important that you, as a consumer, find out additional information from the contractor. Questions such as references, licensing, liability insurance and years in business are just a few things you'll want to ask the contractor. We've provided you with a Questions to Ask form which we recommend you print out and use during the estimate process with each contractor.

Q. What documents should I have available for the contractors?

A. Typically, you should have a survey of your property available. It is also helpful if you have a rough drawing or sketch of what type of structure you are considering. If you have a Homeowners Association, upon selecting a contractor, you will need to have an approved document from the Association, granting you permission to proceed with your project. Your Homeowners Association should be able to assist you with the process.

Q. Will I need to get a Building Permit for my project?

A. The common answer is yes. Most local building codes require a permit and the requirements are usually based on the cost of the job along with the size and type of construction. The contractor you select should be willing and able to secure the permit for your project. The cost of the permit should be included in the estimate.

Q. Why are there no prices on your website?

A. At Enclosure Guide, we feel there are too many variables with each project to present an accurate value. Our site is designed solely as a guide to help you assess the value of your purchase. Costs vary, based on the quality of the materials and the scope of your project.

If you receive a large variance in price from different contractors, ask them for a detailed breakdown on the cost differentials. Most consumers look for a balance between quality and price, and the least expensive is not always the best option.

Q. What is the difference between a sunroom and a screen enclosure?

A. A sunroom can be used all year round and is usually a climate controlled environment. A sunroom has a glass barrier to protect you from the elements outside. The windows and doors are typically glass but can also be made of vinyl or acrylic. A screen enclosure is made from aluminum extrusions and the wall areas are covered with fiber mesh screen as opposed to glass. Screen enclosures are most popular in warm climate areas.

Q. What type of return on investment can I expect ?

A. That depends on the type of enclosure you are purchasing. If you are adding a glass sunroom, then you are adding square footage to your house, which will increase the value. We've seen research that shows a return of 90% or better on a sunroom addition.

Screen enclosures and pool enclosures are typically closer to 75% for an ROI. Either way you are adding to the value of your home and enjoying the new living space.

Q. Do I need an existing foundation for my sunroom or screen enclosure?

A. No. You do not need and existing foundation for your project. If you do not currently have a slab on which to build, the contractor will be able to arrange for the foundation to be built as part of the overall cost for the job. Please click on our Foundations link for more information about the choices for foundations. One other important item to note: if you are excavating the ground to pour a foundation and you have a termite bond on your home, you will need to contact the pest control company who has the bond on your house and have them come out to spray the new area. If you do not, the existing termite bond on your house will be null and void should a problem arise in the future. We urge you to follow through on this to protect your home.

Q. Can I put a hot tub or spa in my sunroom?

A. You sure can! And it is a great way to enjoy and utilize your sunroom all year long. If you are planning on adding a hot tub or spa in the future, plan now for the room to have adequate ventilation. This can be accomplished through designing windows or skylights that open, or you may want to consider a ceiling fan, in which case you'll have to plan for an electrical connection.
